Physical Therapy in Foggy Bottom / West End

Long shifts, long semesters, and a body that has been told to wait its turn. Hospital staff, university staff and students get the same thing here: a cause-first evaluation and a plan that ends, one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, every visit.

Physical therapy for people who work the long shift

Finish the shift without counting down to the end of it.

Chart sitting down without your neck locking up. Get through a full day of classes and labs without a headache waiting for you at 4 PM. Sleep on the side you prefer.

Foggy Bottom and the West End are full of hospital and university people, which means they are full of people who look after everybody else's body and postpone their own.

Shift work loads a body in an unusual way

A hospital day is not one thing. It is hours upright on hard floors, then transfers and lifting, then a stretch hunched at a workstation, then doing it again on a different sleep schedule. Students get their own version: a backpack, a lab bench, a laptop, and a semester of very little variety.

Bodies tolerate that until they do not. Then a stiff neck becomes a daily headache, or a low back that used to complain on Fridays complains every day.

One patient, a student here, described where that ends up and where it stopped: "I've suffered with chronic neck and back pain for most of my life due to my complex medical history... I am a freshman in college in DC and I could have never gotten through these last few months without her." Emily M.

The things we see most often from this part of town: shoulder and neck pain that turns into headaches, back pain from lifting and long hours upright, sciatica that gets worse the longer you sit to chart, foot and ankle pain from a full shift on your feet, and nerve pain, tingling or numbness that nobody has explained to you yet.

You already know what this is. That is the problem.

You are clinically literate. You have already read about your own condition, already tried the exercises, already decided it is probably muscular and probably fine.

That is not arrogance, it is competence used on the wrong patient. You do not get to examine yourself, and self-diagnosis has no hands.

You have also watched what happens to people who put this off for a decade. You do not need us to describe it.

A real evaluation, not a printout

Every visit is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, and the clinician is Trupti Mehta, PT, MS, OCS, a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist with a master's in Human Movement Science from UNC Chapel Hill, certified in Maitland manual therapy, Mulligan Movement with Mobilization and the McKenzie Method. She trained as a physiotherapist and has practiced in India and Zambia.

You get a cause-first evaluation, hands-on manual therapy for the whole visit, dry needling when it is indicated, and orthopedic therapy aimed at the mechanics underneath the symptom. Then four phases: Pain, Prime, Perform, Prevent, with reassessment along the way and a defined finish.

If your presentation belongs with an orthopedist or a specialist instead, you will be told that directly. Several of our reviews describe exactly that.
